LlANG Xiao-chun, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine – (TCM) in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), has been working there since she graduated from Beijing College of TCM in 1978. She received her Master’s degree in Medicine from Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) in 1987. She was rapidly promoted to associate-professor in 1993 because of her exceptional academic achievement and again, to professor in 1997. She was ratified as the tutor of doctorate students in 1998. From 1999 to 2000, she was the visiting professor at the Laboratory of Kampo Medicine, University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. She has assumed the vice director and the director of the Department of TCM since 1995. She has been honored as « prominent teacher » and « precursor of character and morals » by PUMC for many times. She won the « national outstanding middle-aged scientific and technological worker of lntegrative Chinese and Western Medicine (ICWM) » in 1998 and « Beijing innovative model of education » in 2004. In addition, she was voted « the distinguished middle-aged doctor beloved by the people of Beijing » during the first election in 2005. She has learned from Prof. ZHU Chen-yu, a celebrated expert in ICWM with rich clinical experiences in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, gastroenteropathy, gynaecopathia and some other stubborn diseases. In the early 1980s, she summarized the TCM syndrome differential standards, therapeutic principles and prescriptions about diabetes mellitus following Prof. Zhu. This work developed TCM diagnosis and treatment standardization for diabetes mellitus and was widely approved by medical doctors and scientists in China. It also laid the foundation for the « Standardization of TCM Syndrome Differentiation of Diabetes Mellitus, Guiding Principle of Clinical Research on New Drugs of TCM », established by the Ministry of Health of China during 1990s. She had carried out clinical studies on Yiqi Yangyin Huoxue Decoction formulated for treating diabetes mellitus by Prof. Zhu, and published 19 papers during her postgraduate education, 2 of which gained « the excellent prize » awarded by Central Plains Medical Journal from 1981 to 1982. Prof. Liang lays great emphasis on clinical practice and has been summarizing clinical experiences constantly. Based on TCM theories and modern pharmacology, she developed several new drugs including Ningzhi Capsule for treating hyperlipemia, Yiqi Shengjin Huoxue Capsule for treating diabetes mellitus, and Jinmaitong Capsule for treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
