Prof. SHI Da-zhuo, Ph.D., male, was born on March 20, 1960. Prof. SHI entered the Ph.D. program in 1990 at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences under the supervision of Prof. CHEN Ke-ji, majoring in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1993, Prof. SHI started working at the Cardiovascular Center in Xiyuan Hospital affiliated to China Academy of Chinese Medical sciences. Dr. SHI has received advanced training in the clinical practice of cardiovascular diseases, catheter technique, intervention technique and molecular biological techniques in Fuwai Heart Hospital & Cardiovascular Institute, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, and Peking University Third Hospital several times since 1990. In addition, he visited Harvard Medical College in the United States twice for advanced studies of clinical practice and molecular biological techniques on cardiovascular diseases. Dr. SHI was promoted to professor and masters tutor in 1997, and then Ph.D. tutor in 1999. In 2001, he was appointed as the leading scientist for internal medicine of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by the State Administration Bureau of TCM, the People’s Republic of China and China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. At present, he is the vice-president of Xiyuan Hospital; a member of the Political Conference at Haidian District in Beijing; the director of the Cardiovascular Diseases Committee attached to Beijing Association of the Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine (ICWM); the vice director of the Speciality Committee of Activating Blood Circulation and Removing Blood Stasis attached to the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine (CAIM); the vice secretary-general and administrative director of the Specialty Committee of Cardiovascular Disease, which is related to the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies; the standing director of Internal Medicine Committee attached to the China Association of Chinese Medicine; a member of the editorial board of both the Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, and the Journal of Molecular Cardiology of China. Objective:To study intervenient action of Qixue Bingzhi Prescription on the patient of cervical atherosclerosis(AS). Methods:63 cases of cervical AS were randomly divided into a treatment group (n=33) and a control group (n = 30),with 25 cases of same age ranges used as healthy group. The control group was treated with basic treatment of western medicine and the treatment group with the basic treatment plus Qixue Bingzhi Prescription for one month.Changes of blood lipid metabolism, interleukin levels, supersensitive C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) content and the leukocyte adherence expression rate were observed. Results:The total cholesterol (TC) ,triglyceride (TG) , AS index(TC/HDL-C) , interleukin-6 (IL-6) , interleukin-8 (IL-8) and Hs-CRP levels and lymphocytes and the neutrophilic granulocyte adhesion molecule expression rate (ICD11b and zCD11b) decreased significantly (P <0. 05) in the treatment group, with significant decrease of TC/HDL-C and more significant effects on IL-6, Hs-CRP and 1CD11b as compared with the control group after treatment. The indexes of safety before and after treatment did not have significant changes (P > 0. 05). Conclusion : Qixue Bingzhi Prescription can effectively and safely intervene in blood lipid metabolism and inflammatory reaction in the patient of cervical AS,and it has prospect of developmentin preventing formation of AS and stabilizing plaque.

Objective To observe the inhibitory effect of two combinations of active fractions of Qixuebingzhi Formula , the active fractions D ( mainly paeoniflorin) and E (mainly total flavones) blended according to a ratio based on the original formula and D and E blended according to an optimized ratio, on the smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation caused by ox LDL – induced vascular endothelial cell ( VEC) injury – conditioned medium. Methods VSMC was cultured respectively in the normal VSMC culture fluid, ox – LDL – induced VEC injury – conditioned medium, simvastatin plus ox – LDL – induced VEC injury – conditioned medium, D and E blended according to the original formula plus ox – LDL – induced VEC injury – conditioned medium, and D and E blended according to an optimized ratio. MTT staining method was used to assess the growth state of VSMC and a flow cytometry method was used to detect the cell cycle of VSMC. Results After being cultured in VEC injury – conditioned medium, the activity of VSMC proliferation was markedly increased (P < 0.01) and the number of S – phase cells was raised, as compared with the results from the normal control group; and the activity of VSMC proliferation was found to be markedly lower (P < 0.01) and the number of S – phase cells was found to be reduced in the group of D and E blended according to the original formula (1 mg/L) and the group of D and E blended according to an optimized ratio (1 mg/L) , the effects of which were like the those of simvastatin. Conclusion Both combinations of the active fractions of Qixuebingzhi Formula can effectively inhibit VSMC proliferation induced by VEC injury – conditioned medium, to which the mechanism of Qixuebingzhi Formula for preventing and treating atherosclerosis is closely

Based on characteristics of modern epidemic fibrile disease, in combination with clinical understanding,it is held that modern epidemic fibrile disease has following characteristics: (1) Syndrome of both Weifen and Yingfen is often seen in modern epidemic fibrile disease at the set ,drugs pungent in flavor and cool in nature should be selected for expelling heat,but not cause over so as to consume qi and injure Yin;clearing away internal heat by using drugs bitter in taste but not induce cold keeping in muscular striae,so as to pathological factor can not be removed; (2) Most patients who have heavy heat of Qi Fen and are treated by simple clearing away heat with no effect, have pathogenic dampness. They should be treated, different therapeutic methods according to different positions of pathogenic dampness; (3) Most modern epidemic fibrile diseases have the characteristics of « epidemic fibrile disease occurring after incubation »,showing syndromes of Yingfen and Xuefen; (4) For syndromes of Yingfen and Xuefen,you should pay attention to inspection of the tongue. Pathogenic heat and Ying, Xue interlink,marked with red or deep red,dark red ,purplish red tongue proper with ecchymosis and spot on the tongue,and possible blood and mental changes; (5) Syndromes of both Qi and Xue symptoms can be see at early stage of acute infective disease and at the onset manifestations of Qifen of heat of excess type,and syndromes of pathogenic factors affecting Ying and Xue can be seen,most showing syndrome of both Qi and Xue symptoms. Objective To observe the effects of Xiongshao Capsule ( XSC) on blood vessel collagenase gene expression in experimental rabbits with arterial restenosis , and to probe its mechanisms for preventing restenosis. Methods Restenosis rabbit model was established by injuring endothelium of abdominal aorta by balloon dilation and feeding with high fatty diet for 6 weeks. Eighty rabbits were randomly allocated into 8 groups , Group A , normal rabbit for control; Group B, rabbit with simple injured arterial endothelium; Group C, model rabbits at different times after modeling (3 days for Group C 1 , 2 weeks for Group C2 , and 6 weeks for Group C3) ; Group D , model rabbit treated with Probucol for 6 weeks; Group E and F, model rabbit treated with small and large dose of XSC respectively. The effect of XSC on collagenase gene expression during the course of restenosis was observed adopting RT-PCR method and computer image analyzer, and its mechanisms in preventing RS were probed by combined analyzing the change of collagen and patho-morphological examination. Results Compensatory dilation of lumens appeared at the end of the 2nd week; while 6 weeks after modeling, the diameters of lumens obviously diminished with an apparently increased proliferation index. The cell proliferation inhibiting effect in Group D and F was significant. The total amount of collagen increased and reached the peak at the 2nd week but without conspicuous accumulation on intima, which increased gradually and reached its peak at the 6th week. In Group D — F, especially in Group F , the amount of collagen in vascular wall (intima , media and externa) was lesser than that in Groups C. MMP-1 mRNA showed weak expression in Group A and Group C1 — C3 ; significant difference only existed in comparing Group F with C3 (P < 0. 05) . Conclusion XSC could markedly increase the MMP-1 mRNA ex-pression in injured portion of vessels, suggesting that its action in preventing RS might be relatedwith the up-regulating of MMP-1 mRNA expression , increasing collagen degradation and reducing collagen

Objective To investigate the mechanism of Compound Qidan Liquid (CQD) for intervening ventricular remodeling(VR) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Chinese mini-pigs from hemodynamic and collagen metabolic views. Methods AMI model of Chinese mini-pigs was established by left anterior descending ( LAD) coronary artery ligation. The model pigs were then randomly divided into the sham-operative group , the model group, the captopril group, the high and low dose of CQD (hCQD and 1CQD) groups, the former two were treated with normal saline and the latter three treated with corresponding drugs by gastrogavage for 4 weeks after modeling. Blood pressure (BP) , left ventricular pressure ( LVP) , maximum ascending velocity of left ventricular pressure (dp/dtmax) ,myocardial renin (MCR) , angiotensin ( Ang II) , total collagen (TC) , procollagen type III (PC III) , collagen type IV(C IV) , laminin (LM) , serum hyaluronic acid (HyA) as well as pathologic changes in myocardium were observed. Results As compared with in the model group, levels of BP, LVP and dp/dtm were significantly higher, LM and AngII were lower in the hCQD group (P < 0. 05 or P < 0. 01) ; LVP was higher in the 1CQD group (P <0. 05) ; LVP and dp/dtmaX were higher, Ang II was lower in the captopril group (P <0. 05) . Besides , levels of HyA and TC were lower in all the three medicated groups (P <0. 01) , while the differences of PC III and C IV among groups were insignificant. Conclusion CQD has a beneficial effect in Chinese mini-pigs after AMI for increasing LVP and dp/dtmax, improving myocardial contractility and hemodynamic condition, decreasing myocardial Ang II contents ,decreasing deposition of collagen so as to alleviate the pathological process of VR after AMI.
