SHI XUEMIN

Shi Xuemin (1938-)

Dr. Shi Xuemin was born in the western suburb of Tianjin in 1938. He graduated from the Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1962. In 1965 he attended the research course of acupuncture and moxibustion sponsored by the Ministry of Public Health. From 1968 to 1972, he served as a doctor on a medical team working in Algeria. Soon after he returned home, he organized an acupuncture department in the No. 1 Hospital Affiliated with the Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The small acupuncture department which consisted only of three medical workers soon developed into a medical teaching and research centre with a hundred acupuncturists, a hundred beds, a daily outpatient rate of a thousand and ten departments with modern equipment. Dr. Shi is systematized the experience of past acupuncturists and combined it with his own clinical knowledge to raise the academic level. of acupuncture. He has had success in treating such acute and severe diseases as windstroke, colic pain of the gallbladder, and pulseless diseases. Acupuncture Treatment of Windstroke by Refreshing the Mind of Resuscitation that he designed, was awarded the second prize of the scientific and technological achievements by the Tianjin, municipal government in 1986. The Four Major Factors in the quantitation of the needling manipulation that lie put forward was chosen as a scientific research achievement by the Scientific and Technological Commission of Tianjin in 1986 and by the TCM circles in China. His main works include the book The Practical Acupuncture and Moxibustion and the theses The Clinical Application of the Reinforcing and Reducing Methods by Twirling and Rotating the Needle and the Conception of Quantitation of the Manipulation and The Clinical Observations on 617 Cases of Cerebral Infarction Treated with the Method of Refreshing the Mind for Resuscitation. He is now the president of the No. 1 Hospital Affiliated with the Tianjin College of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, director of the Acupuncture Department, chief acupuncturist and professor.

Cerebral accident, a common occurrence, is often fatal or seriously crippling. Since 1972 we have treated 3207 patients afflicted with this disease by the method of « refreshing brain and nourishing Liver and Kidney, supplemented by promoting circulation in channels and collaterals », called the « refreshment-resuscitation » (r-r) regimen. Research work including such scientific studies as laboratory and animal experiments have been done to guide clinical treatment. As this regimen has proved sedating, anti-spamodic, resuscitating enhancing cerebral. As this regimen has proved sedating, anti-spasmodic, resusciating enhancing cerebral blood supply and at the same time regulating hemo-viscosity, we present our experience as follows.

These reports suggested that there was no analytic study on the contraindication and the amount of bleeding, and also the basic research was not enough. In the end, the author introduced their research workapplingacupuncture to rescue the patients with central respiratory failure and arrhythmia caused by cardiac infarction.

[EFFECT OF ACUPUNCTURE ON LEVELS OF EXCITATOTY AMINO ACIDS IN THE BRAIN OF SAM-P/8 SENILE RATS].SHI XUEMIN ET AL.chinese acupuncture and moxibustion. 1998;18(11):689 (chi*).
Levels of excitatory and inhibitory amino acids in different brain regions and effect of acupuncture on metabolism of, excitatory amino acids in the mouse of rapidly aging and dementia ( SAM-P/8 ) were observed. Results indicated that synthesis and degradation of excitatory amino acids in the hippocampus, cortex and striatum in P/8 rats were at hyperfonctional state and inhibitory amino acids changed to a certain extent as compared with the normally aging rats (SAM-R/1) ;acupuncture co /acupuncture could decrease obviously the abnormal increase of glutamic acid, glutamine and asparagine. It is suggested that acupuncture has regulative action on metabolism of excitatory amino acids, and toxicity of excitatory amino acids play an important role in pathologic mechanisms of aging and dementia, and regulative action of acupuncture on excitatory amino acids may be one of important

In this research, we applied computer picture analysing system to measure the storeologidal test parameter of pyramidal cell in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 areas of multi-infarct dementia(MID) model rats. So we could quantize the morphological changes in CA1 and CA3 areas. The result shows that the surface density and volume density of preventing group are obviously higher than those of model group. The number density of prevention group is obviously lower than that of model group and approaches that of false operation group. From the above, we conclude that treating eariler can prevent the injury of brain tissue. The volume density of acupuncture group islower than that of prevention group. It shows that the volume of pyramidal cell of acupuncture group is lower than

BRAIN ATROPHY AND AGEING: RESEARCH ON THE EFFECT OF ACUPUNCTURE ON NEURONAL APOPTOSIS IN CORTICAL TISSUE.SHI XUEMIN ET AL.american journal of acupuncture. 1998;26(4):251-54 (eng).
To study the relationship between brain atrophy and cell apoptosis and possible therapeutic effects of acupuncture, we examined and compared the prevalence of cell apoptosis in the brain of senescence accelerated mice (SAM)-P/10 and in senescence resistant mice (SAM-R/1). The pre-treatment results showed significantly more cell apoptosis in the cerebral cortex of SAM-P/10 than SAM-R11 mice. We then applied acupuncture to two groupsof SAM-P/10 mice: One group received needling at true acupoints; the other group was needled at non-acupoints.There was a significant decrease in the prevalence of cell apoptosis in the cerebral cortex of mice needled at true acupoints suggesting that therapeutic acupuncture may have an inhibiting effect.

NOBEL PRIZE DISCOVERY OPENS POSSIBILITIES FOR EXPLORING ACUPUNCTURE MECHANISMS AND DEMENTIA: THE EFFECTS OF NEEDLING ON NITRIC OXIDE LEVELS IN PASMA AND MYOCARDIUM.SHI XUEMIN ET AL.american journal of acupuncture. 1998;26(4):255-58 (eng).
This study compared levels of nitric oxide (NO) in plasma and myocardium in senescence accelerated (SAM-P/8) and normal ageing (SAM-R/1) mice It also observed the effects of xingnao kaiqiao » acupuncture on similar mice. The results showed that the plasma NO level was lower in 2- and 8-month-old SAM-P/8 compared with that of same age naturally ageing controls (SAM-RJ1) (P<0.01). There were no significant differences in myocardium NO between the two sub-strains of mice. After acupuncture treatment the plasma NO content in SAM-P/8 increased to normal levels. Results suggest that influencing the content of NO might be one of the major mechanisms by which

Clinical and experimental studies on acupoint selection, acupoint prescription, acupuncture direction and depth, and manipulation and stimulative amount, and so on were carried out. The results indicated that the clinical curedrate was 68.92% and the total effective rate was 98.05% in the present group. Detection of basicranial hemodynamics in the patient of vertebrobasilar insufficiency showed that after acupuncture at Fengchi (GB20) , systolic peak velocity in velocity of blood flow (SV) and mean velocity (MV) of blood flow in poly-phases quickened obviously and lasted for longer time, generally lasting for 30-60 minutes, and vascular resistance index (RI) and vascular pulsation index (PI) improved markedly as compared with before acupuncture. It is suggested that resistance of small artery and micro-artery decreases and cerebral blood flow improve.

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used for investigation on electrophoretogram of nucleoprotiens and chromatinic nonhistone of brain cells in the mice of rapid aging encephalatrophy ( SAM-P/10 ) after acupuncture of Shuigou (GV26) and Neiguan (PC 6) . Scaining for optical density and determination of the peak area ratio of protein zones indicated that acupuncture decreased the content of membrance protein(the protein zone of 62 KD molecular weight in cellular nucleoproteins) and increased the content of nonhistone (the protein zone of 24 KD molecular weight in chromatinic proteins). It is suggested that acupuncture of Shuigou and Neiguan points have antagonistic action on the change of some proteins in senile process.

The research sumed up the main acupoints of prescription and clinical therapeutic effects of apoplectic sequelae. In the series, 60 in-patients were observed, they were divided into two groups at random, 30 cases in the Xing Nao Kai Ciao group, 30 cases in the traditional group. There are comparability on different diseases, courses of the disease, ages and so on between the two groups. On the treatment method, Xing Nao Kai Qiao acupuncture manipulation and acupoints prescription were adopted in the Xing Nao group, and the method descriped in the fifth edition textbook was applied in the traditional group. Acupuncture treatment was given two times a day. After 60 days, evaluation of clinical therapeutic effects were made and the changes of blood theology, blood lipoids microcirculation and electromyogram in the two groups were observed before and after acupuncture treatment. The results of therapeutic effects suggested that the cure rates were 26. 67 % in the 6. 67 % in the Xing Nao group and traditional group respectively, obvious improvement rates were 46. 69% and 20. 00% respectively in the two groups. There was an obvious difference between the two groups according to statistical analysis ( P < 0. 05, P < 0.01 ) . It showed that Xing Nao Kai Qino acupuncture method could obviously improve blood rheology and blood-lipoids ( P < 0. 05 ), and played an active regulation role in the nail fold microcirculation. After treatment, electromyogram showed that electric potential of motor unit was markedly increased, myodynamia became stronger. It indicated that the Xing Nao Kai Ciao acupuncture method was better than the traditional acupuncture method on the treatment of apoplectic sequelae. It in worth popularizing.

OSSERVAZIONE CLINICA SUL TRATTAMENTO CON AGOPUNTURA DELLA PARALISI PSEUDOBULBARE.SHI XUEMIN ET AL.rivista italiana di medicina tradizionale cinese. 2000;79(1):45-8 (ita).

Academician SHI Xue-min emphasizes application of spirit in acupuncture technique, and considers that keeping spirit is the first task for acupuncture, reaction of spirit is a guarantee for producing the effect, acupuncture must require the reaction of spirit in needling, and raises location, governing, disease, and treatment of the spirit. Thus, the intension of the spirit is analyzed from physiology, pathology and treatment of the spirit, forming academic
