Yang Jiasan (1919-2001)

Dr. Yang Jiasan was born in Wujin County, Jiangsu Province on January 2, 1919. He was very interested in medicine in his childhood and learned from Dr. Wu Birigsen. After his apprentice he followed a famous acupuncturist Cheng Dan’an to learn acupuncture. In 1936, he graduated from the China Wuxi Acupuncture Training Course, and since then has been practising medicine in Wujin County, Jiangsu Prov­ince. For more than fifty years, Dr. Yang has contributed a great deal to the study of the location of the Shu points, the clinical indicating features, the combination of acupoints and manipulations of acupuncture and moxibustion. He adopted and brought forth a lot of new ideas. He was the editor-in-chief of the book The Shu Points. Based on the book Yang Jiasan’s Experience in Selection of Acupoints the film Methodology in Selection of Acupoints won the second class award of the Ministry of Public Health in 1985. In 1962, working together with Mr. Yue Meizhong, he cured the former President of Indonesia Sukarno’s disease with traditional Chinese herbs and acupunc­ture. Now he is standing member of Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, deputy chairman of the Academic Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the All-China Acupuncture Association, member of the Merl ical Science Association of the Ministry of Public Health. He was a representative of thk. Third National People’s Conference and member of the fifth and sixth Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
